Fly into Arizona and the landscape out the window looks bleak and desolate. Once on the ground it becomes an area where natural forces and people have come together to create visual awe inspiring backdowns. There is a gash in the Earth called the Grand Canyon, a surreal, forest of giant cacti in the Saguaro National Park and the stumpy buttes of Monument Valley which look like Hollywood movie settings that come from John Ford westerns. During World War II, the native Navajo language was used as a secret code by the U.S. military.
Mt. Lemmon is the southernmost ski area in the continental United Stated and the only peak named for the first woman who climbed it. Arizona is also the site of the westernmost battle of the Civil War at Picacho Peak State Park. South of Tucson is the northernmost chain of more than 50 missions built by Father Kino in the late 1600's and can be visited by driving between Tucson and Nogales. There are naturally grown palm trees at Palm Canyon in Yuma. Lake Powell formed by Glen Canyon Dam is more than 185 miles long with 2,000 miles of shoreline.
Arizona's calendar is filled with festivals from the annual Thunderbird International Balloon Classic to the Winterfest Sports Carnival, The Brewery Gulch Days and the Arizona Renaissance Festival.
